ROME (Reuters) - A hugging couple buried more than 5,000 years ago remained inseparable when they were lifted from the ground on Tuesday, the day before Valentine's Day.

Looking to preserve the photogenic embrace, scientists opted against removing the bones one by one.

Instead, they sliced away the entire section of earth in which the couple were buried.

The plot was boxed up and is heading for a laboratory for further examination to discover their age, gender and, if possible, cause of death.

"In the end, we want to put them on display at the national museum," said Elena Menotti, the archaeologist who announced the discovery last week.

Archaeologists had to hire extra security to guard the rural site outside the northern city of Mantova from potential looters and vandals after the discovery made headlines around the world.

Scientists acknowledge they know precious little about the Stone Age couple, dubbed the "Lovers of Valdaro" after the Mantova suburb of farmland and factories where they were found.

Even their gender is an open question until scientists confirm the theory they were a man and a woman.

Archaeologists seem certain the couple died young, since their teeth are intact, and that they died during the Stone Age because of an arrowhead and tools found with the remains.

The indications are the couple did not die in each others' arms and were buried that way in some sort of prehistoric cemetery.

While single burials in the Neolithic period were always east-west, possibly following the daily path of the sun across the sky, the hugging Stone Age couple were buried "the wrong way", archaeologists say.

"They were buried North-South, and we don't know why," said archaeologist Daniela Castagna.

I remember watching this in the news like a week or so ago...this is very curious, and weird...I wonder the purpose of burying ppl hugging each other...seems like a cult or something, or to keep love living forever, I dunno, but it's still cool to see that pic

Sometimes, I wonder how far people go for this kind of stuff. I mean, is it really necessary to unearth this kind of stuff? It's just like you said Daniel, weird yes but not curious to me at all.

Roshan frightens me as I was thinking the same thing about not being dead when they were buried. (GASP)

you know Di, that actually has happened...lots of ppl who have been buried alive and then when they excavate the tomb to get the bones, find that the person was alive and tried to escape cuz you can see the posture of the person and how the coffin is al scratched and stuff...I believe that's a disease, I dunno how to call it...but I know it's called catalepsy...you should search for that "disease" for further information ;)

that creepy thing freaks me out...I don't wanna be buried alive!!

Ok, wait Daniel... the only time I hear of people being buried alive in the US (even in movies), it ain't pretty. Some Mafia, corrupt, drug/guns, voodoo ish... ya know. But, then maybe there is a state of person where you can appear dead-like and none of that had any play into it. Dunno. No matter, I don't want to be buried alive either since I suffer from claustrophobia. YIIIIKES!!

you know the phrase "**** happens", right?...so that still happens, but not as frequently as it used to years ago...I think that the disease was very popular in the middle age and in the 18 and 19th century, but there are a few cases in this time...but I'm not quite sure of it cuz I haven't heard of stuff like that recently

nowadays the technology can prevent that, but there are some cases that you can't tell if it's catalepsy or the person is simply dead...I guess technology has advanced a lot, but not as far to fully prevent that stuff to happen

Yeah, I think an ep of CSI MIGHT have dealt with the "caralepsy" topic, can't recall at the momo. You remember that voodoo movie where they buried some people alive b/c they cheated someone on some $$?? Man I wish I could think of it but it is OLD. If I find it, will link it.

And yes, I do know that panic causes death to be sped up. Hell I near sucked all the air out of a elevator 20+ floors from the ground b/c it got stuck on the 2? floor. I passed out and that PROBABLY saved my life.

Back on topic, the two are posed like they were content with death, ya know. I mean like if I were in love with someone and I didn't them to leave this earth without them, that'd probably wouldn't be a bad way to go. Very peacefull I hope.

I found it.... The Serpent & The Rainbow - a voodoo concoction turns humans into zombies. It gave me the creeps long after I watched it ok. The person's body was dead but his brain was alive in a casket. Bill Pullman stars in it.
