Plenty of mystery surrounds the sudden death of Anna Nicole Smith, and it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer for definitive answers.

The coroner in Florida's Broward County Medical Office took the first step toward determining the cause of Smith's death Friday morning, performing an autopsy to figure out what caused the former model and reality star to collapse in her hotel room leading her to be pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

Chief medical examiner Dr. Joshua Perper said his initial probe was unable to pinpoint either a cause or manner of death.

Perper began his examination of Smith's body at 9 a.m. local time in Fort Lauderdale. He announced during a press conference that the autopsy revelated only "subtle findings" in her heart and gastrointestinal system and that the investigation into her "sudden, unexpected and unexplained" death would take between three and five more weeks to be concluded.

The coroner said he found traces of blood in the 39-year-old's stomach, and a further microscopic examination would be required. He also said that there was "minor trauma" on Smith's back, but he explained that the bruising was the result of Smith tumbling in her hotel bathroom several days before her death.

Officials also ruled out several theories floated to explain Smith's demise.

Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger said that there was no evidence of crime and, despite numerous reports to the contrary, no illegal drugs were found in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Tiger said that prescription medications were found but he declined to reveal what the meds were for of whose name was listed on the bottles.

CNN reported earlier Friday that Smith was taking medicine to treat flu-like symptoms and that the prescriptions were under the name of her companion, Howard K. Stern.

Perper also said there was no indication that Smith had ingested large quantities of pills before her death. He added that toxicology tests are pending.

Nonetheless, Tiger said his department would keep its investigation open until there are more conclusive autopsy findings, adding that they have already begun questioning several parties involved in the incident and that "everyone has cooperated fully."

Smith had a checkered medical history. Aside from battling the flu in recent days, she was hospitalized in November for pneumonia. Smith was traveling with a private nurse, who was the one who discovered Smith unconscious in her room.

According to reports, the nurse was married to Smith's bodyguard, a trained paramedic who administered CPR to Smith until an ambulance arrived. The names of the nurse and bodyguard have not been made public. Both have been questioned by police, as has Stern, who continues to lay low. Perper said he also will question the nurse in attempt to learn more about Smith's medical history.

Meanwhile, several of those who knew Smith are offering their own hypotheses regarding her death.

Cyril Wecht, the private pathologist hired by Smith to perform an autopsy on her 20-year-old son, Daniel Smith, last fall, had previously stated that the boy had a history of heart problems. He now suggests that it's possible Anna Nicole Smith suffered from a similar condition.

Smith's mother, Vergie Arthur, appeared on Good Morning America Friday, saying she believed drugs would prove to play a role in her daughter's demise.

"I think she had too many drugs, just like Danny," Arthur said, referring to Smith's late son. Wecht determined that a fatal dose of antidepressants and pain killer's contributed to the young man's death.

Arthur, who admits that she and Smith had been estranged for years, said that she knew her daughter had been "hanging out with the wrong crowd."

"I tried to warn her about drugs and the people she hung around with. She didn't listen," she said. "She was too drugged up."

Arthur also seemed to place some of the blame for her daughter's death on her inner circle, saying "the people she was around wouldn't let, you know, let us get close to her or talk to her."

But Ron Rale, the attorney representing Smith in her paternity fight with ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead, has shot down such speculation. At a press conference Friday, he said he spoke with Smith several times in recent days and that each of those times she was "totally coherent, totally fine." He also said he had no knowledge of her ever having a drug problem.

Entertainment Tonight reporter Mark Steines, who interviewed Smith several times in the wake of the death of her son and birth of her daughter, told the Today show that, shortly after Daniel Smith died in September, Anna Nicole Smith was found unconscious at her Bahamian estate.

Steines said that Stern found Smith lying face down in the backyard pool of her home and that her bodyguard administered CPR to successfully revive her. Steines also characterized the incident to CNN not as an accident, but as a suicide attempt.

He further noted that an October interview, Smith appeared very "out of it," and she seemed to fall "into a deeper and deeper depression."

Smith's body will remain at the Broward coroner's office for the near future. Perper said he will abide by a Los Angeles judge's ruling to keep the body preserved pending a Feb. 20 hearing in the ongoing paternity battle over Smith's five-month-old daughter, Dannielynn Hope. Both Stern and Birkhead claim to have fathered the infant. (The girl remains with Smith's friends in the Bahamas.)

Smith, Stern and their entourage checked into the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel on Monday. They were apparently in Florida to buy a boat.

The party had planned to check out Friday.

It's not confirmed as yet but more mystery is coming out. Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband has now come forth as a possible baby daddy to the 5 month old stating that the two men who are possibles are not it. One of the later mentioned is asking for DNA from Anna to prove the kid IS hers, and her Mom was on TV saying she warned ANS of execessive drug use. And the baby was in the Bahamas while she was in FLA and... my head is dizzy... TrimSpa, where she was a spokeswoman for the product is in and has been I guess heavy litigation of their claimed product along with her AND, the late 80-90 yr old hubby's estate and her was still in the air. How's that for mystery death???

New DNA test for Anna Nicole Smith, no decision on burial
BY: Actress Archives | Thursday, February 15, 2007

During her life, Anna Nicole Smith was absolutely no stranger to controversy, be it from her marriage to 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall, or the controversy surrounding the paternity of Smith's daughter, Dannielynn Stern. Following her death after being discovered at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, Anna Nicole Smith is causing an even greater controversy over which interested party will be able to claim her body.

Both the boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith, Howard K. Stern, and the mother of Anna Nicole, Virgie Arthur, have made requests to claim the body of the former Playboy Playmate. Broward County Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin did order new DNA samples to be taken from the body of Anna Nicole Smith, but did not rule as to if Stern could take the body to the Bahamas, or Virgie Arthur can take the body back to Texas for burial. Judge Seidlin indicated during Thursday hearings that there would be no quick resolution as to who would be able to take control of the body of the deceased tabloid star and billionaire's widow.

Yesterday, Broward County medical examiner Dr. Joshua Perper urged that the body of Anna Nicole Smith be released immediately for embalming as her corpse was beginning to decay. The AP quoted Dr. Perper as saying, "Nicole has been there already five days and any further delay will effect proper embalming," and Perper also warned that, "any further delay would result in destructive changes." As a result of these pleas, Judge Seidlin ordered another hearing for Friday in order to determine whether the body of Anna Nicole Smith should be embalmed. Reuters quote dJudge Seidlin, who said, "We're going to figure out whether we're going to embalm or not."

Judge Seidlin is caught in the middle of an extensive legal battle involving several different parties. Howard K. Stern, the boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith and the man listed on the birth certificate as the father of Dannielynn, wishes to take Smith's body to the Bahamas and bury it next to her deceased 20-year-old son Daniel. Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, wants Anna Nicole's body buried in Texas, and Smith's former boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, wants DNA from Anna Nicole Smith preserved in order to ensure paternity tests are conducted on Anna Nicole's baby and that the baby being tested isn't swapped. Of the proceedings, Judge Seidlin remarked, "This is not going to be quick."

At times, the court hearings, which were televised, turned into squabbling between the lawyers for each party. Krista Barth, the attorney for Howard K. Stern, leveled a shot at Virgie Arthur, who sat on the other side of the table. CNN quoted Barth, who said, "The woman sitting across from me was estranged from her daughter. I have people who loved her. She stands here today to take her to Texas and put her in the ground all alone. It's sad and it's sick."

In response to the comment, Stephen Tunstall, the lawyer for Virgie Arthur, quipped, "Counsel is trying to trash my client in some kind of emotional appeal. My client is her mother. She wants to take her back to Texas to be buried with the rest of the family. She has the right." Such was the general attitude of the court hearing, which forced Judge Seidlin to work hard at keeping the focus of the meeting. CNN quoted Judge Seidlin, who said, "We're trying to balance the rights and respect of the body with the legal issues."

As for the paternity battle over Dannielynn Stern, which has seen Howard K. Stern square off against Smith's former boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, more parties have come forth to claim they sired the infant daughter of Anna Nicole Smith. Prince Frederic von Anhalt, the Hungarian royal married to Zsa Zsa Gabor, filed legal documents on Thursday seeking a DNA test to determine if he is the father of Dannielynn. The attorney for Prince Frederic von Anhalt, Christopher Fields, was quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle as saying, "Today we filed the petition to establish paternity on Prince Frederic's behalf." Fields continued, "In making these claims, Mr. von Anhalt has been met with much cynicism. Rest assured, Mr. von Anhalt's motives are pure. It is simply to accept responsibility as Dannielynn's father if the testing shows that he is."

At the same time, Prince von Anhalt challenged Howard K. Stern to accept a paternity test of his own, saying, "He could stop this whole circus right away. Why doesn't he take a DNA test and say, 'Look, it's positive, everything is in my favor, it's over." As for why Prince Frederic has waited so long, he said, "It's very simple. If you have an affair with somebody and you're married, and you love your wife, do you think you would go home and tell her, 'Look, I had an affair with this and this and this and this?'" As for the potential damage to his marriage to Zsa Zsa Gabor, Von Anhalt said, "She loves me, I love her. She is mad, of course. But we have to go through that. I made a mistake, and she has to be on my side."
